Summary
A shy but driven young man, Jack found himself drawn to work in Engineering. How things worked, tinkering with broken things, trying to make them work again, and work better than they did earlier, are the questions that drive Jack. Computer systems were Jack’s specialty in the Engineering service. But tinkering around with things makes him the happiest. He is at his best, when he has something not working quite right and he restores it to work like it originally did, if not better.
History
Jack is the youngest of three siblings born to Charles and Melissa Atworth. Oldest child Conor took after dad as a teacher. Conor teachs High School math, while dad Charles is an early grades elementary school teacher. Mom Melissa and middle child Melody both work for Starfleet as investigators in Starfleet Internal Affairs.
Youngest child Jack marched to his own drummer even in childhood. Always figuring things out, wondering how they worked and how to fix them. That mentality was in Jack, even in childhood. Another trait Jack picked up early was diplomacy, more out of necessity than anything else. Mom and Melody saw things one way, while Conor and dad had a completely different view. So, that left Jack to be the peacekeeper and find a middle ground that would satisfy everyone.
Jack’s affinity for both tinkering and finding diplomatic solutions to issues served him well as he reached adolescence and High School. Mostly due to his shyness, Jack only really had a couple truly good friends through his high schools years. Cara Sonders was by far his closest friend growing up. After they finished High School. Cara was going to join Jack at Starfleet Academy. But, Cara lost her mom to a tragic shuttle pilot training accident. After that Cara focused on helping her dad raise her younger brother and sister. She decided that Starfleet Academy could just wait a few years under the siblings were older. Cara knew that her family came first.
At Starfleet Academy in the Engineering labs, Jack and his tinkering skills shined their brightest. In one particular impulse drive mechanics course, the lab requirement was to get a computer generated simulated impulse drive up to 90% operating efficiency. Though some creative tinkering around with connections, Jack and his lab partner managed to get the simulated engine up to 103% of standard efficiency.
