History
Born to an unlikely mixture of an Orion mother and a Vulcan father, the circumstances of that union being worthy of a tale, Selu grew up on the Vulcan colony of Trilan. Though originally a Vulcan colony, in the centuries since the founding of the Federation the world has welcomed numerous refugees and so was a rather cosmopolitan world. As Selu grew she had every opportunity presented to her by her parents and initially looked to eventually follow her mother into scientific research, but her aptitude there was more of a consequence of her true ambition – to follow her father into policing.
Instead of simply joining the planetary police force however, Selu was encouraged by her father to join Starfleet, as he had done at a younger age, in order to gain some experience and to see the galaxy at large versus just a single world in the cosmos. Taking this recommendation to heart she applied for and was accepted into the Academy where she specialized in forensic science, criminal psychology and security procedures, graduating 7th in her class.
Following the Academy she was initially assigned to the USS Len’mivic, a Saber class ship that was responsible for an entire rimward sector of the Federation. Essentially a colonial guardian, the Len’mivic spent most of it’s time rotating around the colonies and worlds of the sector, assisting where it could or rushing to the rescue when required. This gave Selu an introduction to ‘frontier law’ and where she learned what true community engagement looked like from her superior officer, Lieutenant Thomas Malone, as well as the ship’s CO, Lieutenant Commander Janine Prescott. While the laws of the Federation could be bent or stretched, the authority of the USS Len’mivic came from the social contract the crew built with the pioneers in the area.
Shortly after her promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade, Selu was forced to take an extended medical leave from Starfleet and spent the time on her grandparent’s estate on Vulcan. After eighteen months, with time spent between Vulcan and Trilan, she returned to service, requesting a starbase posting and finding herself at Starbase 6 within the month.
From Starbase 6 Selu found herself assigned to Deep Space 12, going from a prestigious commercial hub to a Federation Deep Space posting – essentially moving from a small town to large city – as far as starbases go. There she was able to practice her criminal sciences background more then she had so far in her career and greatly enjoyed the experience. Following Starbase 12 she transferred to Guardian Station, Starbase 38, where she continued in much the same role as her previous assignments.
Following Frontier Day however and the turmoil within Starfleet, a request came in for her to consider a starship based assignment once more, something she hadn’t done in over ten years. After due consideration and a personal request from a member of Starfleet Intelligence, Selu accepted the posting, along with a promotion, to the USS Republic.
