Summary
Lucius is in his early forties. He is the first member of his family since his maternal grandfather to join Starfleet, much to the chagrin of his parents and younger sister. The fact that he chose to go into Security and Tactical didn’t help matters. By and large, he is a quiet man who tends to stick to himself. He is slow to make friends but once he does, he can be very outgoing and lively around them.
Appearance
Lucius stands at about 6’2″ (1.88 meters) and weighs roughly 250 lbs (113.4 kilograms). He has brown skin like his mother despite his father having a super white complexion. He has black hair that is starting to grey and generally wears a close cropped beard that is also salt and pepper in coloration. He has a large build and the traditional tattoos of his mother’s family on both his shoulders and pectoral muscles and reaching down to his elbow. He keeps his hair cut short per regulation but has a tendency to grow it out when he’s on leave. He has silver blue eyes like his father, and has been told he has ‘old eyes’.
Personality
Lucius is reserved for the most part but can become very social once he gets to know people. He likes to sit back and learn folks. He’ll watch them interact with others, learning what their social cues are and their tolerances for certain topics and types of humor before approaching them. He has also had to balance his age with his rank in recent years. When he was an enlisted man, he just acted like the others, but as an officer, he finds himself to be a decade or more older than his peers and it is sometimes a source of disquiet and uncomfortableness. He also tends to be suspicious and overprotective. He’s been told this is a result of him being a teenager during the Dominion War and living through the Changling Scare on Earth. That being said, he is kind and loyal if not a bit gruff sometimes. He can also come off as disgruntled but he always means well.
History
Lucius was born in the year 2361 in the city of Longwood, Florida. He grew up with a pretty normal and decent childhood. His father Oskar, was a chef who operated a local restaurant. His mother Mo’unga was a music teacher at Johnathan Archer High School. When he was three years old, his mother gave birth to another son named Edwin Kinni, and then four years after that his parents had a daughter named Siobahn Nanaipau’u. He felt bad for his sister when he was younger. His father was of Scottish ancestry but his family had lived in what had formerly been the United States since the late 19th Century. His mother however was Samoan and Tongan and as a compromise with her husband, each child’s middle name was from her culture and his sister by far got the most complex one. This led to her having several issues in elementary school when it came time to spell her full name.
Upon graduation from high school, Lucius had decided he wished to have a slightly more exciting career than either of his parents and decided to enlist in Starfleet. Having grown up reading about heroes like Malcolm Reed and Hikaru Sulu, and of course the legendary Jean-Luc Picard, he felt he had to see the galaxy through the same lens they did. The lens of Starfleet. Sure there were other ways he could see space, but he didn’t want to be a cargo hauler or a merchant. He wanted to explore. He wanted to get out and be the first person to set foot on an alien world. He had also read several stories about how much scientists could be the most on point about making sure their experiments were safe ‘inside’ the lab but out in the field, they seemed convinced the galaxy was completely safe despite the fact that nearly every generation since the founding of the Federation had been in some sort of armed conflict. And so not only did he decide to enlist in Starfleet, but he chose to enter Security.
His parents weren’t thrilled with the idea and his baby sister was completely convinced that rogue synthetics were going to come out of nowhere and kill him. But that didn’t deter him and in June of 2380, he was standing in formation at the Starfleet Technical Services Academy on Mars getting yelled at by a five foot two inch Drill Instructor who seemed permanently angry and red faced. That is until the last three months when he started treating Lucius’ Training Platoon like they might actually graduate. And he was thrilled when on 22 June of 2381, his platoon in Dress Uniform marched in review and he could see his parents, his brother, and his sister in attendance.
Lucius’ first assignment out of training was as a Brig Technician aboard the USS Thomas Paine, an old New Orleans Class ship. From the perspective of a 19 year old, this was quite possibly the most boring thing he could have ever been assigned to do and hated it. That is until he realised that it was the perfect opportunity to study and cross train in ship’s weapons systems rather than focusing purely on law enforcement. By the time he had finished his tour on the Thomas Paine, he’d become qualified as a Small Arms Calibration and Repair Tech as well as General Starship Weapons Systems Tech. As such, he was made a Torpedo Load Tech on his next assignment, the USS Late, a Miranda Class ship that was probably commissioned around the time his grandfather had been born. After three years and some very interesting times, he was assigned back to the law enforcement side of things as a Security Response team member aboard the Excelsior Class USS Berlin. He would spend four years aboard the Berlin under the command of Captain Dennis Alsobrook. It was under him that he finally decided to get Bridge Qualified and after two years, moved from Security Response Team to working the overnight shift manning the Tactical station on the Bridge. This gave him a chance to see bridge operations at work even if it was during the ‘night shift’. This also helped with his promotion to Petty Officer 1st Class. He was now on the cusp of attaining the coveted rank of Chief Petty Officer. However, rather than that, Captain Alsobrook convinced him to go for his commission and after nearly two years of convincing, he finally took the entrance exam and soon found himself once more at the position of attention on a pair of yellow footprints. This time in San Francisco, Earth at Starfleet Academy.
The Academy was a blur. Four years of more training than he ever thought possible. It gave him a much greater respect than he previously had for officers knowing they actually did as much training as they did. He still hated Ensigns who thought they knew more than Chief Petty Officers, but his respect did increase. Upon graduation and his commission as an Ensign, he was once again marched in review and once more his family came to see him. Though it was amusing this time around being ten years older than most of his graduating class. He was commissioned as an Ensign and assigned to the USS Khonsu. As an Aquarius Class, this was now the most advanced ship he had been assigned to. And while cramped, it was gorgeous. He was once more 3rd Shift Tactical Officer so that meant reporting to duty at 1600 and manning Tactical until 0030. He had grown to like this shift, so he didn’t mind. The true boredom came when he was assigned to USS Kumari, an Inquiry Class ship.
Aboard Kumari, which was now the largest ship he’d ever been on, he was assigned to 1st Shift. So 0000 Hours to 0830. Adjusting his sleep schedule took three months. The 1st Shift Commander however was kind enough to help with this by hosting random tactical drills at all kinds of fun hours of the night. He both loved and hated that man. In time, he was assigned to the USS Alacrity. This was his favorite ship so far. An Odyssey Class. It was magnificent and had been the stuff of his dreams for years. To finally be serving on one was amazing. He was now the Relief Tactical Officer on 2nd Shift. This was the shift that the Chief Security and Tactical Officer and most of the command staff was usually on the bridge so being her relief was quite educational. She used to teach him a great deal during down time and it helped because eventually in 2402, he would achieve new heights.
