Summary

  1. Commander Virgil Jefferson Murphy was the first officer of the USS Nightingale, under Captain Nickolas Hunter – he was also the Captain’s best friend and confidante.

Virgil was married to Lexi Murphy and the father of Victor Murphy – Virgil died during the android attack on Mars and the Utopia Planitia Shipyards, leading to Victor being adopted by Captain Hunter and his wife, Dr Abigail Hunter.

Appearance

Virgil is a human male of African descent, as such he is dark-skinned, with brown eyes and greying-brown hair. At the time of his death, he was six feet and five inches tall, with an athletic build, but there is definitely some fatigue setting in.

Personality

Virgil is the perfect balance of stoic and bombastic – with the wisdom to know which side of him to show in any given situation.

Virgil is kind, with a gentle soul, who is fiercely loyal to his friends, family and the principals of the Federation, to the point where he had declined several promotions to Captain, in order to stay close with the crew of the USS Nightingale.

History

Virgil was born in the 2340’s. Growing up in Harlem, New York, he absorbed a lot of the culture and history of the neighbourhood, especially the music and a love for the theatre.

As a toddler, Virgil’s parents would take him to New Harlem Week, an annual celebration of African-American, African, Caribbean, Hispanic, and European history, as well as remembering it’s time as a sanctuary district and the riots that took place similar to the same time as the Bell Riots which led to its reclamation and segregation from New York City. During the festival, Virgil would meet a young Nickolas Hunter and the two would become fast friends, as their parents meet and chat.

From there, Virgil and Nick attended the same elementary and high school, where they joined a secret society and later went on to join Starfleet Academy together. After four years at the Academy, Virgil and Nick were assigned to various ships, including the USS Constance, during the Battle of Wolf 359, where Virgil and Nick  rescued nearly a hundred crewmembers, with Nick as the pilot and Virgil using the transporter, on a captured cargo shuttle named the Thunderbird.

After Wolf 359, Virgil was given a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and assigned to the Advanced Starship Design Bureau and was based at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards.

Virgil would later meet and fall in love with Alexandra Simmons, who was also part of the design crew that was working on the designs for modular rescue craft.

As the Dominion War began, the Bureau was being directed more and more in developing war ships and weapons – which Virgil hated – so he and his wife asked to be reassigned to the USS Nightingale, in order to be more effective on the front lines.

While acting as the Chief Engineer of the USS Nightingale, during a rescue mission in the aftermath of a battle with the Dominion, the Nightingale was ambushed and heavily damaged, leaving the Captain dead.

With the Nightingale in dry dock for repairs, Nickolas Hunter receives the promotion and is offered the captaincy – he accepts on the condition that he can promote Virgil to commander and have him as his first officer.

The Hunter / Murphy duo would fly many missions together during the Dominion War, but once it was over and the crew got some rest, Virgil and Alexandra discover that they are going to have a baby- this would be their son, Victor.

During the Romulan evacuation, the Nightingale was called to the Battle of Mars, where the ship would be used to help beam survivors from ships and disaster zones.

The drone ships turn on the Nightingale and open fire, forcing it to leave the disaster area, but the engines are damaged. Virgil runs to Engineering and activates a manual sphere separation, which launches the sphere section to safety, but heavily damaged the Nightingale, killing Virgil, but saving thousands.

was forced to give up his life in order to save the ship, its crew and his family.
