Summary

Shy, skittish, and almost constantly anxious, Alondra Petrenko can be relied on to do two things: fix whatever needs fixing with a bit of elbow grease, and find something, somewhere, somehow, to worry about. Her mind exists in a permanent state of “okay but what if this happens?”. More than a little bit lonely due to her lack of friends, Alondra doesn’t actually really know how to make any- so she keeps to herself, does her job, and stews in her anxiety a little bit more.

Appearance

Standing at just barely 5’4 and at best passably built, Alondra is best described as “small” from practically any angle. The only thing “big” about her is that wild, poofy untamed mop of coily hair that refuses to be tamed further than a messy, puffy ponytail. She’s not often one for being particularly neat- and trying to stay such is difficult when you spend most of your time inside a wall panel or clambering up into a hallway ceiling- and is often left looking unkempt and messy.

Personality

Alondra is often hard to get to know, not because she’s got a stone wall up around her heart, but because she is the dictionary definition of antisocial. Skittish and shy, she often seems incapable of speaking up for herself or reaching out to make friends, and much prefers to keep to her own devices- literally. Social situations tend to make her clam up and shut down, and in large groups she’ll often spend more time looking for a way to leave than actually trying to talk to someone.

But once someone does get past her allergy to social interaction, Alondra somehow manages to be a rock in a storm. She’s quiet and often a woman of few words, but she seems to be better at handling other people’s problems than her own. If you need someone to get feedback from or a shoulder to cry on, she’s a reliable and surprisingly competent option for someone who looks like she’s being haunted by poltergeists 24/7. She likes helping people- she’s just incapable of helping herself.

History

Alondra Kleiss never got to know her parents. They were Starfleet officers, and like so many Starfleet officers, one day they went on a voyage, left their infant daughter with their neighbors, the Petrenkos, and never came back. But she was also lucky- the Petrenko family were kind souls and already raising a little boy only about a year older than Alondra. It seemed only right that they raised the girl as their own.

Alondra and Otto were thick as thieves right from the start- she was his shadow, always following him wherever he went. This also ended up meaning that she didn’t have many friends growing up but him, because Otto was an incredibly shy child from a young age and the only person he could bring himself to be with was his little sister.

This also ended up meaning that Alondra picked up his anxiety, a sibling feedback loop that hampered them both into antisocialness for just about their whole childhood. What few friends they did have, they cherished, but for the most part the Petrenko siblings just kept their heads down and kept to themselves. Academically, Alondra performed just barely better than Otto, but neither of them were particularly standout, except for Alondra’s growing fascination with anything mechanical.

It was likely no surprise that, when Otto decided to join Starfleet, so too did Alondra want to follow- much to the chagrin of their parents, worried that Starfleet would claim their kids just as it’d claimed their neighbors. But Otto, for once in his life, was determined and hit Starfleet Academy once he hit 18. Alondra followed the next year-

– and came within just a hair’s breadth of flunking the entrance exam.

Starfleet Academy was anxiety incarnate. So focused was Alondra on keeping her grades up and dreading the potential of having to leave- even though her mechanical skills were plenty solid enough to impress upon her teachers- that she made few friends and gained a reputation as a generally uncomfortable bunkmate. Every time she stepped into her quarters- either on the Mellstoxx III campus or on USS Exeter– she tended to fill the room with her anxious air, putting everyone on edge.

Luckily for everyone involved, her fears were unfounded. With her shiny single pip on her collar, Alondra Petrenko graduated with the Class of 2401- a year behind her brother Otto, already on USS Oakland– and found herself posted to Starbase Bravo, just a hop, skip, and jump away from her old academy.
