Summary
Gil’ora is only the second member of her species to enter Starfleet Academy, proud to follow in the footsteps of her fallen comrade, Lieutenant Or’uil of the USS Hathaway. As part of her training at complex on Mellstoxx III, she has been posted for a training cruise aboard the USS Columbia.
Appearance
With brown, mottled skin, large ears and bulbous green eyes, Gil’ora is very much a typical member of her species. Hairless, her leathery skin resembles that of an amphibian from Earth. Her large nose and three lungs allow her to take in huge amounts of oxygen, which, in turn, helps her to excel in physical contests. Small and athletic, she is able to run rings around most of her class when it comes to fitness tests and enjoys the challenge of competing in the Academy marathon before her training ends in two years’ time.
Physiology-wise, she shares the same traits as the rest of her species. An underdeveloped digestive system sees her mainly requiring a liquid diet. Her vocal cords are also underdeveloped by humanoid standards, resulting in her requiring a voice synthesiser to communicate easily.
Personality
While her physiology is stereotypical of her species, her personality couldn’t set her any further apart if she tried. Fun-loving and outgoing, Gil’ora finds it very easy to make friends. Her open and inquisitive nature endears her to many and her love of the galaxy around her makes her an ideal candidate for Starfleet. Studious and keen, she is an avid learner, listening to her instructors well and heeding their advice. She doesn’t find everything easy, working that much harder to ensure she makes a success of her career and makes her people proud.
History
At around fifteen years of age, Gil’ora is what is considered to be an adolescent for her species. During this time, it is not uncommon for Ungeat to get the desire to leave the homeworld, though only a handful have ever been brave enough to do so. Gil’ora, like her brethren Or’uil, is one of those, and is only the second of her species to join Starfleet. Following The Lost Fleet crisis, where her homeworld of Un’gar was liberated by the crew of the USS Hathaway, Gil’ora developed a keen interest in Starfleet and the Federation. She studied with the help of her contact, Lieutenant Or’uil, and it was thanks to him that she was able to get the support of Fleet Captain Nazir and her recommendation to join the Academy. Sadly, she would never get to class Or’uil as a friend or colleague as he died of injuries sustained at the hands of the Borg a short while later, just weeks before she would enter the Academy.
Gil’ora spent a year at the Academy on Mellstoxx, excelling in her early studies, meaning she was eligible to apply for study leave aboard the USS Columbia.
