Summary
Chief Petty Officer Monika Boyan was a senior Non Commissioned Officer in Starfleet during the late 23rd century. Monika is a solid and tough woman. Neat and orderly, she cannot abide disfunction, at the same time she also has difficulty in seeing beyond the literal. As far as her personal life goes, few have dared ask Boyan about her ambitions or her hobbies.
History
Early Life
Monika Yelena Boyan was born in the port town of Magadan Oblast, Russia, where her parents were local government employees. Her childhood was tough with the harsh Arctic winters, and she learned very early on to hide her weaknesses. To survive, things had to be done a certain way and so a regimented way of life appealed to her. Her grandfather taught her ice fishing and skiing.
Monika’s future seemed to be destined to be literally and figuratively frozen in her hometown, until her mother got assigned as a transporter operator in the transit station. Young Monika would watch fascinated as her mother whisked people away in a golden haze on what she thought were grand adventures to the other side of the world or even outer space! Inspired, when she was older, Monika joined the crew of a freighter on her own grand adventure. Chatting with a crewmate, she learned about Starfleet and the opportunities available in that organisation, and after just three voyages Monika swapped uniforms.
Starfleet History
After training, Monika served on various outposts as a transport pilot. A memorable highlight included piloting a shuttlecraft through a Force-2 ion storm. Aboard the craft as a passenger was a Lieutenant Commander Styles who commended Boyan on her flying skills and suggested that should he command a starship, he would be happy to have her aboard. Monika was impressed with his bearing and his command attitude.
Eventually, in 2285, she did end up serving with the now Captain Styles aboard the USS Excelsior. The night before the Excelsior was to launch from spacedock, Monika had switched her shift to allow a comrade one more night ashore. She was therefore on duty on the bridge when Admiral James Kirk attempted to steal the decommissioned USS Enterprise. Excelsior was order to pursue and in the ensuing chase, Boyan discovered that she did not have total helm control. Excelsior’s new head of engineering, Captain Montgomery Scott, who was Kirk’s former chief engineer, had sabotaged the new transwarp drive. The crestfallen and defeated expression of Captain Styles as the ship was towed slowly back to Spacedock was one of those moments that would be captured for eternity in her mind. In the moment, regulations only allowed her to offer Styles the consolation of a sympathetic glance, but as time wore on she felt more sorry for him. Kirk’s reckless behaviour angered Monika deeply and hardened her appraisal of Kirk and his crew – famous or otherwise.
Since the failure of “The Great Experiment” Monika has served on a succession of deep space vessels. Fleet records indicate that Chief Boyan served aboard the starship Delphinus. The USS Delphinus was assigned to a patrol station along the Federation/Klingon Neutral Zone and engaged both Klingon forces and independent raiders.
Some time prior to 2292, Chief Boyan was assigned to the starship Minerva.
