Summary
One of many Evora who is now in Starfleet, Yuzar was among the first few waves of new cadets that went through the Academy after her home world became a protectorate of the Federation in 2375. Although a dedicated and accomplished scientist, Yuzar has an unusual fascination with parapsychology. She was a devout user of what would be similar to tarot cards and astrology readings in human culture on her homeworld. This personal fascination has integrated into her everyday life. Astrology-like practices, in particular, inspired her specialty in astrometrics. One might find her a bit of an oddball because of this weird fusion of interests.
Appearance
Like most fellow Evora, Yuzar is short in stature. Due to her age, she has a slightly higher body fat ratio, so some would consider her to be a bit overweight in appearance. She wears a looser-fitting uniform around her torso area, so it is not as tightly tailored as others and a bit more box-like in shape. In her off-duty hours, she can be found wearing lavish, flowy, and colourful caftans. Her eyes are a deep crimson orange, an uncommon trait among her people and something she takes particular pride in as it is a rare genetic trait passed down through the females within her lineage.
Personality
Yuzar is a strange balance between whimsical and logical. There is a constant internal struggle with the side of herself obsessed with the paranormal and the scientist – they are often at odds with one another. She can frequently come across as two completely different people depending on the mode that she is in at that time. The mystic fortune teller or the one mapping the cosmos with mathematics and practicality – there are times, however, that the two sides have a vergence which can throw those who know her well into a spin of confusion.
History
Pre-Starfleet
Yuzar grew up in a privileged but challenging time amongst the Evora. Her parents were both teachers, and her grandmother was regarded as a mystic in her community, with strong ties to an Evora form of astrology and psychic practices. It was this exposure that led to a passion for parapsychology within her, but also Yuzar took a keen interest in learning all she could from her grandmother in her last years. This was balanced with a solid educational support system, so modern knowledge was incorporated into her upbringing with just as much passion from her parents.
The advancement of sciences in her youth was exponential but directly conflicted with strong religious and cultural beliefs. A space race of sorts sponsored by political powers at the time led to warp drive capability when Yuzar was only eighteen. A year later her people went through a dramatic cultural and societal shift, as they came to know they were not alone in the universe and there was other life out there.
After her home world became a protectorate in the Federation, Yuzar was determined to join Starfleet. It took her several years to be able to compete for a spot at Starfleet Academy – something which her parents supported with pride.
Academy Days
Yuzar found her time at the Academy a bit of a mixed bag. She struggled being surrounded by much younger youth, so she could not necessarily relate to them as much. Given her species’ shorter life spans, she had reached a level of maturity beyond even her numerical age in terran years. That being said, this maturity allowed her to have an impressive focus on her studies. She specialized in astrometrics and demonstrated an aptitude for it to her professors. She also became known on campus as the ‘tarot’ reader and psychic. Something that provided some amusement to her, even though she knew some people found her a bit on the eccentric side.
Starfleet 2386-2392
Yuzar was fortunate enough to be placed a deep space mission when graduating the Academy onboard the USS Prism. It was a four-year cataloguing expedition deep into the Gamma Quadrant. Yuzar found it challenging to be away from her aging parents during this time but had an absolute blast from a work-life perspective, putting her astrometrical knowledge to good use. She also developed some long-lasting friendships during this initial assignment. She served on the Prism for a couple of years post-deep space mission but had to take a leave when her mother passed away. Being an only sibling, the responsibility of looking after her elderly father fell to her and she embraced this honour, deciding to pause her career without hesitation.
Leave of Absence
Yuzar’s leave to support her widowed father lasted four years before his passing. She appreciated the opportunity to return home to Evora and not only care for him but get to experience the vast changes on her world since becoming spacefaring nearly a decade prior with warp technology. Although there were still engrained religious conflicts with the modern pathway of the Evora people, there seemed to be a bit more harmony than when she had left for the Academy. During this time, she taught part-time at a local school in her community.
Starfleet 2396-Present
After her father’s passing and some time to grieve, Yuzar gave up her parent’s home and stored only the most precious of heirlooms on Evora before making her return to Starfleet. An opportunity for another exciting deep space mission onboard the USS Luminaire had come up, and she accepted immediately.
Life on board the Luminaire was a bit challenging and tough. Yuzar did not quite connect with the crew like she had on the Prism. She suspected many found her to be a bit of an oddball, given her unique hobbies (astrology/tarot card readings). She seemed to struggle more with connecting with other species after having spent a number of years at home surrounded mainly by her own people. This led Yuzar to fully immerse herself in her work with such intensity that she burned herself out.
By the time the mission on the Luminaire was complete, she had earned herself a promotion for the hard work she had put in. However, she requested a transfer to a much smaller vessel with less of a demanding astrometric workload. She also wanted a break from deep space missions and the ability to keep her options open for movement. This led to her placement on the USS Calistoga, where she currently serves.
