Profile Overview

Sebastian Farrell

Terran Male

Character Description

Standing just shy of 6 feet in height, Sebastian is athletically built and prides himself on his fitness levels. Despite approaching only his fifth decade, his hair is beginning to show signs of greying which is why he keeps it, and his beard, short and well groomed. Seb’s fitness regime includes regular visits to the gym, sparing sessions with various members of the crew and leading jogging sessions to maintain fitness levels. His brown skin is beautifully smooth which is down to his skin care regimen, not that anyone else on the crew would know as he’d never tell anyone. Beneath the uniform, Seb has a twelve-inch scar on his back, running from the lower left to the upper right of his torso – a physical reminder of a lost battle with the Jem Ha’dar.

Personality Overview

With a keen intellect and an eye for the unexpected, Sebastian has quickly forged a reputation as an effective combat leader, earning himself a promotion to executive officer of the USS Thesis prior to reassignment to the Boadicea. Intent on carving out his legacy in the fleet and advancing to the upper echelons, Sebastian acts only when the time is right for him. A man that commands the utmost respect from his crew, usually thanks to stories of his service during the war and beyond, Farrell is a man that any officer worth their salt would want to serve alongside. Due to his outspoken nature and his ability to ruffle feathers, he often finds himself at odds with the brass in the same way that legendary Captain Picard would. He speaks his mind, offers his opinion (solicited or not) and scolds people as he deems appropriate, refusing to suffer fools lightly. As commanding officer, he expects nothing but the very best from those under his command and will take anyone to task if he feels they are not pulling their weight.

If you ask anyone serving with him, the Terran’s brash nature is a small price to pay for the skill and experience he exhibits on the bridge of his ship, with the man often considered to be the deciding factor in many a situation. Despite his fearsome, growing reputation as a combat leader, Farrell is no warmonger. His years of service and his subsequent reputation have helped him successfully navigate dozens of first contact missions, as both an executive officer and during his early days in command) whilst he has been involved in negotiations for no less than five different trade pacts and diplomatic treaties.

A talented tactician and well versed in matters of intelligence, politics, strategy and tactics, Farrell is always a safe pair of hands to have around in a crunch situation. Despite his flaws, of which there are many that he would identify, he has a great understanding of, and respect for, every person he has ever encountered, whether they be an ally or an enemy. Being prepared for anything that might arise is one of his strongest mantras and, as such, he is never caught with his pants around his ankles. Calm and considered, he will not act until he has the advantage and the greatest chance of success but, in the rare times where he has suffered failure, he treats the experience as a learning curve, vowing never to make the same mistake twice.

Brash, outspoken, opinionated. Just some of the words he would use to describe himself. He acknowledges he could perhaps tone down his words from time to time, but he would never do so at the detriment of his more than plentiful positive attributes. Whilst Sebastian is a well rounded officer with vast experience, where he really lacks any skill set is in the sciences. He is not the kind of officer you want to have in the middle of a science related issue, and he knows it. That being said, he is not afraid to accept his flaws or ask for assistance, advice or guidance from his subordinates.

Food is a passion of his and he enjoys nothing more than cooking for his friends and colleagues. He shares an interest in literature and archaic music forms. Romulan Osol twists and Jumja sticks are among his favorites. His beverage of choice is the aromatic Kali-fal. Because he likes to eat, he can often be found exercising and keeping fit in order to stay in shape. He is a lover of music and fine art.

Personal and Service History

At forty-six years of age, Sebastian is far from a Starfleet veteran but has a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw upon, nonetheless. His journey to the Santa Fe began in 2343 when he was born at Earth’s Spacedock. Whilst not exactly a planned pregnancy, when Sebastian arrived, he was welcomed with open arms and his father in particular was devoted to his young son. Once the USS Exeter, home of the family, left Spacedock, it was dad Darius who stayed home to look after his son whilst his wife returned to duty as soon as possible. It was probably this that resulted in the somewhat strained relationship with his mother that would develop later in life.

Darius was crucial in teaching Seb everything that he knew and taught the youngster to grow into a respectful, polite young man who was determined to succeed in life. It was thanks to the values instilled in him that Sebastian applied to join Starfleet Academy in 2361 at the age of eighteen. He had developed a keen interest in athletics and martial arts from a young age, which had led to a keen interest in strategy and tactics and ultimately, led him to apply to the Academy’s Security and Tactical programmes. Upon graduating with honours in 2365, Sebastian had the entire galaxy at his feet.

With a keen desire to reach the very top, Sebastian followed the journey of the USS Enterprise-D with great interest even as he found his own choices somewhat limited. His first tour of duty saw him join the Cheyenne-class USS Ahwahnee (NCC-71620) where he initially served as a relief Security Officer before taking on tactical duties on the bridge during night shifts. Less than two years later, the Ahwahnee, along with 39 other starships, fought the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 on stardate 44002. The heavily damaged ship was discovered by the USS Enterprise-D after the battle with only a handful of survivors, of which Seb was luckily one. He earned his first commendation, the first of many citations, for fighting valiantly alongside the ships executive officer when the ship was boarded by the Borg.

Sebastian remained with the Ahwahnee for some time after she was salvaged and, by early 2368, the Ahwahnee joined Captain Picard’s fleet that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. The ship was one of twenty-three assembled for the fleet and was one of the seventeen chosen for the tachyon network. When the network was disrupted by a high-energy burst released by the Romulans, the net was no longer effective in a radius of ten million kilometers around the USS Sutherland. Subsequently, Picard ordered the fleet to proceed to Gamma Eridon at maximum warp, where the fleet would attempt to reestablish the net before the Romulans got there. Once Commander Data of the Sutherland had exposed the Romulan involvement in the conflict, the Ahwahnee was the first to support the Sutherland during the Romulan withdrawal.

During these tense times, Sebastian was identified as a potential candidate for service on the Sutherland and transferred to the Nebula-class starship once the task force returned to Federation space. Whilst the ship underwent some minor repairs and received a new command staff led by Captain Christopher Hobson, Seb was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and assumed the role of Assistant Security/Tactical Officer. The Lieutenant’s time aboard the Sutherland was somewhat routine for the first three years of his tour, serving around the Cardassian Border Worlds and spending many a layover at the beautiful world of Bajor and at Deep Space Nine. It was at DS9 that Seb met the love of his life for the first time. Jessica Harper was a newly minted Ensign fresh from the Academy when they first met. They spent several weeks together while Seb was on leave and the Ensign awaited her first assignment, but they agreed to stay in touch when they eventually parted ways.

The Sutherland served valiantly in the Federation-Klingon conflict, supporting many engagements in the Archanis Sector before returning to DS9 at the conclusion of hostilities. Just a few months later, Sebastian applied for his first role as a senior officer aboard the Galaxy-class USS Magellan but was ultimately passed over for the role, the first time something hadn’t gone his way. He remained with the Sutherland until the ship suffered massive damage during the Seventh Fleet’s engagement with the Dominion in the Tyra System. Only fourteen ships from a fleet of one hundred twelve made it back to Federation lines, with the Sutherland among them, and the ship was laid up in dock for several months as she underwent crucial repairs. During her layover, Sebastian finally transferred to a senior role, joining the Akira-class USS Templar under the command of Captain Vasoch Gor.

As the ships Chief Security/Tactical Officer, Sebastian quickly proves himself to be a valuable asset in the ships arsenal and is crucial to the ships survival in many an engagement with the Dominion. He soon achieves the rank of Lieutenant and becomes a formidable, reliable and trusted ally of the Captain’s. Templar served in nearly every engagement of the conflict with great distinction, only missing the devastating Second Battle of Chin’toka by hours thanks to engine trouble and a failed repair job. The ship rescued many survivors from the battle, including junior Lieutenant Jessica Harper of the Excelsior-class USS Tolstoy. Reunited in the face of insurmountable odds, the pair finally strike up a relationship, ensuring that there is truly something worth fighting for.

As Templar rejoined the fight for the Battle of Cardassia, Jessica remained on Deep Space Nine as part of the stations crew complement. The battles around the Cardassian homeworld were fast and fierce, the Templar proving crucial at different times thanks to not only her Starfighter complement but also her massive torpedo capability. Particularly effective against the orbital platforms, the ship was one of the first to not only make it to Cardassia Prime itself, but also to land troops on the surface following the Dominion surrender.

With the Dominion War over, Sebastian tried to return to a somewhat normal life, but found the aftermath of conflict particularly tricky to get past. He spent many months under the guidance of the Templar’s Counsellor before ultimately seeking a change of scenery. Having served with great distinction, Seb was offered several postings, eventually joining Captain Gor aboard the Galaxy-class USS Adriatic as Chief Security/Tactical Officer at the rank of Lieutenant Commander and as Second Officer. In this new capacity, the Commander began his fast track to the command ranks.

Adriatic operated along the Romulan Neutral Zone for many months in between assignments to both Betazed and Bolarus as they assisted with rebuilding efforts following the war. In 2382, Sebastian applied to join the Advanced Command and Tactical Training Programme at Starfleet Academy, using his many years of experience during the war and beyond to assist him in completing the latest challenge of his career. After many hours of work, and even more hours in command simulations, Sebastian passed the course and split from Captain Gor for the first time in nearly a decade. Transferring to the Intrepid-class USS Thesis as Executive Officer, under the command of Bajoran Captain Kala Deion, Seb began to make a name for himself on this new path. Thesis travelled the length and breadth of the Federation carrying out a wide variety of operations, including spending several months in the conflict zone known as the Gavarian Corridor.

Sebastian, a talented tactician, was part of a special meeting as a response to yet another dramatic event in the history of the quadrant. It had been discovered that a Romulan star would soon turn supernova, destroying the planets Romulus and Remus as well as dozens of others, and killing at least nine hundred million Romulans. After a series of tense negotiations, the Romulan Star Empire had requested aid from the United Federation of Planets, and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard convinced Starfleet to mobilize a massive rescue armada — “ten thousand warp-capable ferries” — to aid in the evacuation efforts. Promoted to join the Admiral’s team, Sebastian worked on the implementation of this massive operation. A humanitarian mission of such scope, despite the political pressures from several worlds on the outer rim of Federation space, was exactly the kind of work Sebastian had joined Starfleet to be part of.

The armada was being constructed at Utopia and in orbit of Mars when, on First Contact Day, multiple A500 synthetic androids at Utopia Planitia suddenly went rogue. They lowered the deflector shields protecting the shipyards and the planet itself and hacked the Martian defense net. Moments thereafter, numerous synth ships began targeting the rescue armada, the Utopia Planitia Shipyards, and the Mars Orbital Facility. The satellite network surrounding Mars was turned against the surface and the synths began bombarding the surface, igniting flammable vapors in the stratosphere and causing massive damage to the planet’s infrastructure.

Commander Farrell, who had been at a meeting on one of the orbiting facilities at the time, could do nothing but watch, unable to prevent the destruction of almost the entire surface of the Martian planet. When the call came for the nearby USS Proxima to be activated, Farrell volunteered to join a quick gathering of officers who boarded the Nebula-class starship and, as acting second officer, he helped get the ship out of dock. Although the Proxima was only able to offer scant offence, she was able to destroy three of the attacking Synth vessels before the attack was over. In the aftermath of the devastation, initial reports estimated that over three thousand had been killed, but eventually the death toll was revised to 92,143 in total – a number that would be seared into the mind of the Commander and all others who had been present. It was a devastating attack at the heart of the Federation, made worse by the fact that it could not be determined how or why the synths went rogue. It was also an attack that put paid to months of work on the rescue armada. The destruction of the Romulan rescue armada left the relief operation in tatters, leading Admiral Picard to submit a plan to replace the lost ships with mothballed vessels from Beta Antares Shipyards and the 40 Eridani Starfleet Construction Yards, and to crew them with officers from his operation, such as Farrell himself. Alas, the Federation, advised by the commanders of Starfleet, rejected the revised operation and abandoned its promise to aid the Romulan evacuation, a decision that shocked Picard, and caused dozens of resignations among his staff. With their mission in tatters, Farrell found himself cruelly reassigned as Strategic Operations Officer for a task force sent to patrol and secure the border against any possible incursions into Federation space.

Over a year went by until, once again, Farrell was forced to watch in horror once more as the disaster that had been predicted unfolded much sooner than anyone had anticipated. The Hobus Star, located deep into Romulan Territory, did indeed go supernova, causing a massive shockwave that destroyed several key planets, effectively decimating the entire Empire. The Starfleet forces along the border were on high alert as the tragedy unfolded, with officers like Farrell standing, waiting, for permission to render aid. Eventually, to their relief, the order was received and several early relief missions along the former Neutral Zone took place. Farrell helped to coordinate events aboard the starship Thesis, dealing with many a Romulan in the course of his duties. But less than a month after the shocking event, the Romulans ordered Starfleet forces assisting them to leave Romulan space. With relations at an all-time low, and the Empire in tatters, the Thesis was reduced to border patrols and escort duties that felt like a return to the 2360’s, when the Empire first came out of isolation. Just over a decade since the end of the Dominion War, the quadrant had changed beyond recognition.

In the years that followed, Farrell earned quite a reputation as he used all of his influence to work with those Romulan refugees who had made it to Federation space, and helped to establish several colonies where Federation and Romulan citizens would live together. Back in the field, Sebastian made the choice to request a transfer to a vessel remaining in the Romulan theater. Thus, his five-year tour aboard the New Orleans class Boadicea began, and so too did the Coard-Farrell reign of terror. Between the two command officers, the Boadicea was turned from an aging vessel with a somewhat complacent crew to a graceful old lady with a crew that was proud to serve her.

In 2399, after what seemed like an age as executive officer to Captain Coard, Sebastian was offered his own command, but opted to take some leave from Starfleet. Events later transpired which drew the Commander back into the service of Starfleet, his fearsome reputation as an honest and effective combat leader perfectly dovetailing with the reliability and loyalty he would demonstrate to any commanding officer, the commander was finally made a Captain. With years of experience on New Orleans class starships, Farrell rendezvoused with the USS Santa Fe at Starbase Bravo, overseeing the final stages of the ships refit before journeying to New Bajor in the Gamma Quadrant.
